In Riihimäki, in the Kynttilätie area of Finland, a district heating system integrating Enerblue CO2 heat pumps was recently installed to serve industrial customers. Thanks to the 4 IRIDIUM air-water heat pumps with R744 natural gas, an overall total of approximately 400 kW of heating capacity is achieved. The system also includes storage tanks with electric heaters and supervision system. With the help of heat pumps, the costs of the heating network are optimised by replacing the use of diesel oil, reducing the carbon dioxide emissions from heat production by approximately 290 t per year.
One of the important feature of the IRIDIUM units is that they are able to produce hot water even in severe frost conditions by working down up to -20°C while still maintaining a good power factor (COP).
Thanks to their characteristics and developing technologies, heat pumps are viable and increasingly interesting solutions for managing energy consumption in order to reduce costs and optimise energy consumption as well as meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements.
